As important as the Doctor is in the hearts of Whovians everywhere, he is by far not the only character worth discussing in the show. The Doctor’s Companions offer quite a good amount of discussion, due to their varying personalities and just the number of companions there are to talk about. With that in mind, I want to explain what I love so much about one companion. He is by far my favorite companion in the new series, and his name is Mickey Smith.
Now, most of you will probably have the same reaction. “What? Why him? He’s useless!” And you would have a valid point. Mickey doesn’t do a lot in his time on the show, or at least it doesn’t seem like he does. However, when you really look at all of the moments when he has actual character development, you see that his character arc is pretty great, and he has a lot of brilliant moments. Warning, there are spoilers ahead:
In the 2nd season two-parter “Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel”, Mickey, the Doctor, and Rose find themselves in an alternate universe, where Mickey’s grandmother is still alive. However, there is another version of Mickey in the alternate universe as well, although his name is Ricky. He is a take-charge leader, operating with a team of rebels working against the government. By the end of the episode, Ricky has been killed by the Cybermen, and Mickey has saved the day. At the end of the episode, as the Doctor and Rose are about to leave, Mickey tells them that he plans to stay in this universe, change his name to Ricky, and live up to the late Ricky’s name by being a general badass with the only other surviving member of the original Ricky’s team, Luke. The episode ends with Mickey and Luke planning to travel the world shutting down Cyberman factories. This is a brilliant end to his character arc, and when he showed up in the season 2 finale, my jaw dropped. I couldn’t wait for him to really start kicking ass.
The main problem with Mickey Smith is that the show itself seems like it’s out to get him. He is played to be a fool solely to make Rose and the Doctor seem like better and more effective characters. The high point of this is in the season 4 finale. Mickey shows up with his guns and his general coolness, but then Davros just kind of bosses him around, pulling some confused bullshit, adding on to the already copious amounts of confused bullshit in the season 4 finale.
So that’s why I love Mickey Smith, and what annoys me about how he is mistreated. I hope you’ve all enjoyed, and I’m really sorry about how long this post has taken. I’ll try keep up more regular postings from now on.
